Pfeiffer Women’s Basketball Earns 65-58 Win Over Berea

The Pfeiffer University women’s basketball team had three players score in double-figures and limited visiting Berea to 30.3 percent shooting in a 65-58 win at Merner Gym on Thursday afternoon.

In the first quarter, Pfeiffer jumped ahead 10-0 as the Mountaineers missed their first 11 shots.  Berea finally scored at the 3:47 mark to make it 10-2.  Pfeiffer would then hit five free throws over the closing stretch of the quarter to take the early 15-5 lead.

With Pfeiffer up 19-7 in the second quarter, the Mountaineers would close to 26-20 at the 2:04 mark following a basket from Bailee Vanhover, but the Falcons would respond again, pushing the lead to 34-22 at the half.

In the third quarter, Berea again trimmed the Falcon lead to six points (37-31) but Pfeiffer once again went on a run to boost the lead back to as many as 13 points (46-33) following a foul shot from Brina Bentley. Pfeiffer would lead 50-42 after the end of the quarter.

Berea made it’s run in the fourth quarter, fighting back to within three points following a Kiley Barnard three-pointer, making it 57-54 with 3:11 to play.  Pfeiffer responded by putting together back-to-back baskets from Sydni Bickford and A’Mya McClain and Berea wasn’t able to get the Pfeiffer lead below five points the rest of the way, with the Falcons earning the 65-58 win.

Individually, Bickford led all scorers with 18 points. Bentley had 12 while McClain finished with 11.

Berea was led by Bethanie Williams’ 15 points and Briana Lanham had 10 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

The win improves the Falcons to 5-2 on the season while Berea drops to 9-3 overall.
