Pfeiffer’s Monte Sherrill named a Top-100 Collegiate Coach

Pfeiffer University head softball coach Monte Sherrill was recently named as a Top 100 Collegiate Coach by ExtraInningSoftball.com.

The Top-100 list features mostly Division I head coaches and assistants and only seven Division III coaches made the list, with Sherrill being the lone representative from the USA South.

Of the Top-100, only four coaches from the state of North Carolina are included. In addition to Sherrill, Jennifer Patrick-Swift (N.C. State), Donna Poppa (North Carolina), and Marissa Young (Duke) made the list.

Sherrill, a 1987 Pfeiffer graduate, enters his sixth season at the helm of the Falcon program and has posted a 174-37 overall record since he returned to The Village. His winning percentage of .821 currently ranks as the highest winning percentage in all divisions of the NCAA.

Since arriving at Pfeiffer, Sherrill engineered the largest turnaround in school history, with his 2016 team totally rewriting the Falcon record book.

Pfeiffer captured Conference Carolinas tournament titles in 2016 and a regular season title in 2018. Pfeiffer climbed to No. 2 in the NFCA NCAA Division II rankings in 2018 and finished with a 46-8 overall mark, earning Sherrill Conference Coach of the Year honors, his first at the collegiate level.

After reclassifying to Division III, Sherrill lead Pfeiffer to ECAC championships in 2018 and 2019 with the Falcons downing Penn State-Behrend both years by the 10-run rule.

In 2020, Pfeiffer finished 16-1 after a shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to Pfeiffer, Sherrill won 10 NCHSAA 4A championships and made 13 finals appearances. Of those titles, he captured seven at Alexander Central High School and three at Central Cabarrus High School. Over his high school career, Sherrill posted an impressive 753-60 overall record and owns a playoff record of 104-20 and is the only coach to have won NCHSAA titles at two different schools. He also won 26 consecutive conference titles at the high school level.

In 2013, Sherrill was inducted into the Pfeiffer Sports Hall of Fame and is also a member of the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and twice was named the NFCA National Coaching Staff on two occasions.

Additionally, he excels in softball field maintenance, as during his tenure at Alexander Central his facility won National NFCA High School Field of the Year.
