West Stanly claim 2A Midwest Regional cross-country crown

The West Stanly women’s cross-country program captured the NCHSAA 2A Midwest Regional title Saturday at Fisher River Park in Dobson.

Natalie Almond captured the individual regional crown with a first place finish in 20:34. The time resulted in a first place finish despite two different heats having to be used for each gender due to health and safety protocols.0

Sophomore Savanah Hendzel joined Almond on the All-Region team with her sixth place finish in 22:11. Makalyn Morton (20th, 23:26), Holly Hatch (22nd, 23:36) and Karsyn Underwood (30th, 24:12) concluded the scoring for the Colts.

West Stanly’s 62 team points placed them well ahead of runner-up West Stokes (110 points).

The West men’s team earned a fifth-place finish regional finish, with James Shue taking fifth place overall to qualify for the state meet as an individual. Shue’s 5K All-Region time of 17:19 paced him behind only two athletes from regional champion Atkins and two athletes from runner-up South Rowan. Cam Misenheimer (28th, 19:22), Blayne Morton (45th, 19:56), Elijah Morton (49th, 20:06) and Carson Wells (50th, 20:21) concluded the scoring for the guys.

With the women’s top seven qualifying along with James Shue qualifying as an individual for Friday’s 2A state meet, the Colts will travel to Kernersville’s Ivey Redmon Park to compete in the season finale.
